Find Care & Housing
Snowbird, when I tried to convince my parents it was time to sell their home and move into Independent Living, they felt they were weren't ready.   NOT READY??   They were in their mid-to-late 90's.

Elders will give one excuse after another for not wanting to move from their house.   Dad even said that Mom thought after reading one of lovely brochures for a place that was like a resort, that the placed looked too snooty..... [rolling eyes].   I think what it was that the brochure had a nice diverse group of seniors living there, and my Mom wanted to be in a place with people like herself.

So what happens is that we wait for a crises to happen.   My Mom had a serious fall that placed her in long-term-care.   And after she passed, my Dad wanted to pack and go to one of those senior living centers.   Once moved in, he was so happy being there.

If they are in a condo now, do they really need independent living? There is not much to gain except the meals.

Why do they want their parents to move to independent living? For Dad to see the benefit of this big ticket price there have to be some nice improvements he'll recognize.

Sticker shock is not at all uncommon in the elderly. My mother had not bought sheets for decades -- I think she'd been given some during that period. I took her to Penney's to get a new set. She was so shocked and upset at what they cost now, we had to step away and look at other things while she calmed down. Familiarity with costs will help some. If Dad repeatedly sees the costs for various communities they will become less shocking for him
