They have my mom on Morphine 15mg every 2 hours, Ativan 1mg every 6 hours plus ABR gel every 8 hours. She hasn't been eating and drinking very little. Does this seem like a lot?

Likewise, it depends on your mom's health situation--- However, even if your mom is on a hospice situation, you have to gauge the administration of the morphine as only you know best what is good for your mom. Never be afraid to direct, to suggest, to research, to be well-informed; and if you have the Health Directives for your mom decide what will be to her best interest as you love her most.... My father had CHF, COPD, a broken hip & pneumonia all at once a year ago... The hospice had him on heavy morphine in the beginning but we aggressively monitored his health; his well-being and limited the hospice administration of morphine...Because of his severe condition, too much morphine could have depleted his lungs, affected his heart & made his condition worse--so we had him on a very low dosage..Sometimes against what the hospice suggested to be the amount... We worked as his nurse, a liaison to his doctor & followed our hearts above all... The hospice gave him 2 weeks to live---But we know the will of our father....You see, a year later= 2012...my dad is still loving life (though still bed-ridden) is doing marvelous well & is still loving our caring for him as a family....In his case, we controlled the administration of morphine due to his COPD & CHF & broken hip... & absolutely made sure we made great decisions that we feel is best and that will extend his life... So the lesson here us to never be afraid to be the voice & advocate for your mom..Only You know her best....Best of luck to you!

Yes, it seems like a lot, but some patients may need a lot to be kept comfortable. In a Hospice situation the goals are different than what we expect from typical health care.

Depends on why she is on Morphine? Is this a Hospice situation? Either way ask questions..!! Let them know your concerns of her meds, you have the right to ask and be her advocate.
