We are moving Mom from her independent living apartment to assisted living in another state. She will live with my brother and his wife while the Medicaid is applied for and approved. She has memory problems. Any tips for helping her make decisions on what to keep? We have one week.

Can you rent a storage unit close to the AL? Or maybe brother’s basement or attic? Pack everything in boxes for right now. You can dispose of what you are absolutely certain she won’t need or doesn’t want, but don’t pressure her to make hard and fast decisions right now. That will be confusing and stressful for her. When she moves to her new place, then she can take her time and with your help, decide how she wants to decorate her new room. I agree with no heirlooms or antiques. My mom would throw things away and then claim someone stole them.

Thanks! She really doesn't own anything of monetary value.

I wouldn't bring anything that has sentimental value, or things that can break. no expensive jewelry etc. Don't take that antique vase...

tell her you will keep those things safe for her.
I guess it depends also how much space you have in AL compared to independent living space. you don't want things to be too crowded. especially if she will be using a walker.

I didn't let my mom have any rugs, wasn't really allowed  (not even in Bathroom) and no coffee table. tripping hazards.

Have you checked with the other state to make sure Mom will be able to get Medicaid in that state? It doesn't usually go over state lines. You have to set up residency. AL usually don't take Medicaid unless you have private paid for at least 2 yrs.

My brother a d his wife have taken the task upon them of talking to DHWS and researching facilities. Mom needs live in care now and none of her children live in her state, hence the move. We may end up paying for a year or two of her rent. We'll see.
