My mother is having a small amount of fecal incontinence. It's not big, but it's more than just a small smear (more like a large smear). Is it time for adult diapers or is there a more minor solution or aid?

Do you provide care for her in the home or does she live in a facility? How long has it been happening?

You might discuss changing her diet with her doctor a little to see if that will help, since she may not be voiding completely when she does go. You might also try taking her to the toilet at regular times to see if that will make any difference.

My loved one went from bladder incontinence to bowel too, pretty quickly, so we didn't have much of a choice. Perhaps, some others who have gone through this will chime in with more info. Good luck.

In my experience they don't suddenly develop full blown fecal incontinence, it starts small and gradually worsens.
You might want to check her bowel function, pay attention to how often she goes and if it is hard or soft. Sometimes when they get constipated they can pass small amounts without ever completely emptying, this can lead to an impaction. Also if very loose it can be hard to get to the bathroom in time. If things don't improve mention it to the doctor. In the meantime, pull ups are your friend.
