Are there therapeutic mats for the home to aid elderly in walking?

Your grandmother is very smart to understand that carpeting is going to be hard for her to manage with a walker. Can the carpeting be taken up and the floor refinished with hardwood or laminate? Placing mats on top of the carpeting is going to increase the likelihood of falls, I'm afraid.

Generally, a social worker visits the home and helps you with these obstacles. Can it be replaced with a shorter carpet or hard wood floor?

She is going to have to keep walking. All of the nursing homes are tile, for safety and hygiene, too.

The social worker came and didn't mention anything to us, now that she's home we are noticing the difficulties. You don't say why she was in rehab (broken hip perhaps?). Are there any other difficulties you are starting to notice? You can get into "fixit" mentality, or you can step back and look at the bigger picture, which is "how much longer is grandma going to be able to live alone there"?

Can understand, You bought new carpet and its no long you have to change it. Can't you use a plastic cover I mine a rough plastic over your carpet.
