Mom has been living with us for the past three years. (Hindsight is 20/20 and I wouldn't have done it if I'd known then what I know now!) BUT! I talked with Long Term Care today and Mom scored a whopping 41 (out of 60) on her medical scores. That means, as soon as we have the official diagnosis of dementia, She will QUALIFY for LTC!!! It's been a bumpy ride, but things are finally moving in the right direction! If all progresses well, she might just be in a memory care facility by the end of the year!
So, to all those out there who need the encouragement... keep on putting one foot in front of the other. It's crazy overwhelming and a slow process at times, but you'll get there. ((((HUGS))))
(I'm not sure if I'll be able to respond to anyone. I've not been able to for a while now.)

Find Care & Housing
So glad that things are finally moving forward for you.

My grandpa started out in ALF then moved to MC after several issues. I thought it was going to make my life easier but unfortunately it has not. The hard things have just changed. Now I get at least a call a week about something or other and when I do venture to see him its always the same convo (he doesnt need to be there, hes fine, the staff is terrible, the food is terrible, its a prison, he wants a lawyer etc) I started therapy last week and cant wait for my next session. Praying your journey is easier!

I just want to clarify that MC and LTC are 2 different wings in most facilities. If one qualifies for LTC it usually means they are no longer mobile and need help doing the most basic things. My MIL was in LTC for 7 years. Medicaid will pay for LTC, in tandem with one's SS income, once they qualify both medically and financially.

This is not the case with MC. Medicaid does not pay for MC in a facility. This is why I want to make sure you understand what your Mom has actually qualified for...

My Mom got into LTC with just the diagnoses of Dementia and the need for 24/7 care. Because she was a far risk, she did use a wheelchair but scooted around in all over the place. There were people with the ability to walk. May need help with ADLs.

No one sets out to be a cautionary tale, it starts with the best of intentions. Thanks for sharing your story as we so often see the good intentions of moving a parent in turn into an untenable situation. There are times when it goes well for both sides, but it’s unfortunately rare. Good for you for getting testing done and finding mom an appropriate place to live
