Laeric, please understand that no one can "assume" you into the role of caregiver. Hopefully your father didn't extract a promise from you to not ever put him in a nursing home. If so you are in no way obligated to attempt to carry out this promise as you'd have no way to know the rigors it entails. If you want I have a checklist I created for new (or "sudden") caregivers. Just PM me if interested. I'm also an only child managing care for 4 elders. I wish you all the best and peace in your heart as you labor to help your dad and figure things out.
