I have been posting about my mom not wanting to eat. She is 84. I visited today and tried to feed her some applesauce. She would eat a few bites and then says her gut hurts. Her repeated blood work showed a little improvement so Dr. said no iv is needed just yet. The Remeron has not really made a difference in the last 2 weeks. She lost another 3 pounds this week and is now 99 pounds. She lost from 121 -99 in 7 weeks. I asked about Marinol and the Dr. said that he would start to try it tomorrow, if she does not eat breakfast. Just wondering if anyone has any success stories with Marinol!

honestly in my experience remeron makes a person eat everything in the house . if your mothers belly hurts when she eats a bit id say her digestive system is getting slow if not in the process of failing . my mother died from dementia related causes a year ago . her major complaint was food lying in her gut and causing pressure on her organs . her digestive system eventually ground to a halt and she was gone in 3 days .
rapid weight loss is one indicator that hospice keeps an eye on .
i think your mother is wasting away and doc is just giving her the marinol to accomodate your wishes and / or to satisfy a curiosity of his own .

Because my mom is so mobile the nurse said that she is not actively dying. Since they stopped the zyprexa, she was a little more cognitive today. If she doesn't start eating soon, she will waste away.

We gave my daughter Marinol. It is horribly expensive, more than the actual weed itself, and not very effective. We found a small pinch of actual cannabis worked a whole lot better than Marinol. If you can't get cannabis, I would pick Reglan for appetite.
