I come to you all quite frequently because there is a wealth of information out there and I really appreciate it. I need to know if anyone has ever heard of "STRESS" causing a Grand Mal (Tonic-Clonic) seizure? I just had one and it has really turned my life upside down. Now I cannot drive and have just had the rug pulled out from under me. I have been under an enormous amount of stress and all of my MRI's and EEG's are normal. I don't know what else to think.

I think you have to have a full battery of tests from experts like neurologist, cardiologist, etc., to rule out actual damage or illness, but after that, the psychiatrist can evaluate. Conversion Disorder can manifests itself in many ways. However, now that I know about it, it makes sense. I just thought my loved one has stress, anxiety, etc., and in a way that is what is at the root, but it's much more than that. The upside to this disorder is that it's quite treatable.

Having something like that happen must be quite alarming. I have a loved one who went through something similar a couple of years ago.

He went to all kinds of specialists and had many tests, including the one that tests your equilibrium. Also tested for ear infections, blood pressure, cardiac, dental, blood conditions, opthamologist, etc. Everything was considered due to his repeated episodes of seizure like spells. His body would jerk, loose his vision, feel faint like passing out, and feel dizzy. His blood pressure remained normal and his heart showed fine as documented with a monitor he wore for weeks.

These spells started suddenly when he was under a lot of stress. AFTER all medical experts ruled out other medical reasons, he was referred to a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with CONVERSION DISORDER. You can check it out online. He accepted the diagnosis, went on medication for depression/anxiety, and learned ways to ward off the spells if he feels them coming on. Two years later no re-occurrences!

You might discuss it with your doctor. I'd keep an open mind.

Who diagnosed the grand mal seizure? I'd go back to that person and request advice on where you're supposed to go from here. It isn't fair to stick a label on a person and then just leave her to deal with it unaided.

Anything we suggest would be purely anecdotal. I would suggest a web search of "one time seizure causes" and branch out from there. Literature suggests that as many as one in 50 will have a seizure at some point in their lives. Often the cause is never concretely determined, but that is true if there are multiple seizures as well (epilepsy). I'm sure it is traumatic, but in a way no determinable cause is a much better finding than it could have been.

08/23/16..... By any chance are you on a computer type device for many hours? I noticed as I got older I need to take a break every 20 minutes otherwise I will get a weird buzz type sensation in my head that last only a second or two [long enough to scare me to death] that makes me feel like I could pass out. Primary doctor told me to take breaks.

I do believe stress can cause a multitude of different health ailments.
