My step father is very sick. He's on kidney dialysis. He's a diabetic among other things. He really needs to be in a hospital/nursing home full time. My elderly mother has been trying to care for him but can't. He falls a lot and I'm worried he will get seriously injured. They have Kaiser. He's there right now!! They keep releasing him to my mother. They have very little money left. What can we do to get him placed permanently in a nursing home. What programs, if any are available. My mother is about to have a nervous breakdown. Thank you!!

There should also be a social worker or discharge planner who can be contacted about the situation affiliated with the dialysis center or the hospital. Or, you can arrange for a comprehensive geriatric evaluation and that should be a covered service and would include that kind of practical help.

if your parents have medicare you can get hospice care in the home or nursing home care. I would call The Area Agency on Aging in your county or the nearest largest city. Also your father's dr and local hospital would have this info to give you as well. Hospice will come in to your home and provide care...comfort care if he is in final stages. To get him placed in a NH (nursing home) you can either call local NH's to be placed on a list or if your father needs immediate medical attention, take him to the ER (emergency room) and tell them you cannot take him back home. I hope this helps you, and let us know how things go for your mother and father. Hugs to you!!
