Find Care & Housing
Well, I live in suburban Chicago. There are a number of Adult Daycare Centers, which I call (to my mom) The Senior Center. She goes to one about 3 miles from our home every Thursday. They take her from 7:30 AM 'til 5:30 PM. The cost, including lunch and a snack, is $63 a day. They have little programs, exercise, socializing, they bring in doggies for the oldsters, and they're affiliated with a child daycare center in the same building. Sometimes they bring in the kids to show their artwork, etc.

Mom is 87. Wheelchair bound. Many health issues. She totally enjoys it. It's a social outing for HER and a free day for me. WinWin.

Dad & Mom are in a nice homey Facility. Dad keeps Hallucinating & seeing a man in there room who he believes is trying to steel his wife (mom). He is very upset about the situation. This constantly happens usually early morning. The staff told Dad to tell the guy that he was gonna start charging him ( the strange man) rent. This got rid of the nonexistent fellow for 2 days. We tried a small amount of reasoning with dad but of course that did not work. If this did not agitate him so much I would ignore it but it also scares me for Moms safety-- what if he mistook her for the "Guy". I know about staying in HIS WORLD BUT HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM or similar & solved it. He is fine most of the day. Any help?

I agree that a Senior Center is a good bet. The one in my city has various exercise activities, ranging from chair workouts to Tai Chi, plus arts, crafts, etc. My father's Senior Center has similar activities but includes a woodworking group. There's a small cafeteria where seniors can have meals together. There are sometimes visiting nurse BP checkups, etc.

If her mind is still in good condition and she enjoys reading, try various libraries for book clubs. In this area librairies have taken the lead in providing educational and wholesome activities for all ranges of people. One has free classical concerts on Friday evenings.

You might also check local communities to find out if they have outdoor music programs. There are several in this area, ranging from a city sponsored series to church sponsored concerts. All are free. Some are around noon, but others in the evening (that may be more problematic when the days become shorter).

HR, sometimes senior hallucinate when they have UTIs. I would talk to the admins at the facility where your parents are and alert them to his hallucinations and ask how to protect your mother.

My mother didn't recognize my father one time, called me and told me there was a strange man at the door trying to get in. My father calledl me and said Mom wouldn't let him in.

I told my mom I would call Dad and ask him to come home, and I told Dad to drive around the block and keep trying to get in until Mom's hallucination passed.

Into Google search (or other search engine) type adult day care Lutz FL. That will be one way to start exploring what is available in your area.

A senior center is great for someone who is fairly independent. Adult Day Care is appropriate for those who need a little more supervision. Most Adult Day Care programs allow participation from one to five days a week, offer transportation and a meal, and often have additional services such as trimming toenails or showering.
