As I had said before my mother is a smoker and she caused a fire on our front porch, unable to get her to completely quit I switched her e cigs. And she is doing well with them. Don't have to worry about a fire at least. But when I'm not around she tries to get anyone she can to go get her a pack of cigarettes. And admits that she just wants them and she try's to guilt us into getting them for her. Not working but I'm just wondering if it's normal. She was always a manipulative and selfish person but now with dementia it seems to be amplified.

I say yes. Two hallmarks of dementia are self-absorption and an unwillingness (or inability) to engage. Mom's wants what she wants, and her "social nicety" filter is on the fritz. Over time, you become a daughter less and less.....and a means to an end more and more. It's sad and stressful. Take good care of yourself.

If I told you a fraction of the crap my mom has pulled - you wouldn't sleep at night! But in my experience the answer to your question is YES. The key seems to be if they were selfish and manipulative before the dementia, they will be that on steroids while having dementia. Good luck!
