I had a friend tell me not to wait until it's too late for my husband to qualify for Hospice.
What are the qualifications for Hospice? I don't think age is a qualification. I think at one time a person had to have cancer and only have months to live but I don't know now. I think that has changed.
I didn't even know Hospice would take dementia/Alzheimers patients.

You can always request a hospice evaluation, they take many things into consideration and determine if someone meets the requirements. It is based on Medicare paying, so you have to not seek treatment for life saving, sustaining medical issues. Insurance is what decides a lot of what can and cannot be done.

Please contact his doctor and ask for a hospice evaluation, this will help you understand what they offer, how to get them on board and what decisions you must make about future medical treatment.

I am sorry you are losing your husband to this brutal disease. Please remember to take care of you during this difficult journey. Hugs.

Generally it is someone who has 6 months or less to live, but there are no hard and fast rules. Hospice will evaluate her and her needs for pallative care. Is she still at home, does she have 24 hour a day care, is she in a nursing home? Pain management is a major factor in the use of hospice.

If my post appears twice sorry.

There is what is called FAST scale criteria. Functional assessment Staging test. My mom's was 6d. Seeing it written clinically, greater than 50 percent chance of dying in next 6 month's was jarring, but informative. She passed June 4th.

Look in obits for most frequently used hospice. Call major hospitals to see who they recommend. Medicare part A pays.

You are giving them a peaceful passing. And that's a gift.
