we use briefs with pads on my Dad and we also use washable mattress protectors and chucks. He has a bedside urinal (cath-bag style).
Every morning when I go to check on him - his brief is wet AND in the floor, his washable pad is wet and sometimes the sheets/mattress are wet.
There must be an answer out there! please help!

This is my first time on any type of interactive site; I'm not sure how to reply-sorry. So, here it goes - Dad is still using the bedside (cath-style) urinal in the middle of the night (output is about 600per night - for what's in the bag) but we believe he is sleepy and laying the urinal too flat so the urine is going into the brief or onto the protecting pad. We have been working on the technique but to no avail. This week we used a portion of his large dry/erase board with the week days listed...if he is wet in the am he gets a frown face by that day; if he's dry - he gets a smiley face! And, we added a "goals section" to the board. Dry bed is a goal along with "try a new vegetable weekly", "improved my attitude" and "set out on the porch 4 hours a week". A message on the board says, "Call Kimmie if I'm wet". Well, I'm happy to report that we've been dry for three days!! That may sound silly to some and it probably won't last but hey - whatever works. I'll need a new gimmick soon, pretty sure of that.
I realize this problem will be "fact of life" eventually, he is 81 and not mobile. My goal (for all of us) is to find solutions to rising issues...however crazy they may seem. During the past year we have had many hurdles but through trial and error we have managed to jump them all, so far.....and we know there will be more. Here's one - we used Duct tape to secure a h/duty shower curtain to the carpet beside his bed because he kept dropping the urinal on the floor at night. Then we found the cath-bag style urinal. At his age, with urinary track infections already a problem....an actual cath is not possible right now.

Have the same problem with my wife. (stroke 54 YO). If it's from a stroke there's not much you can do. I use hospital type bed pads w/ a matress pad and Depends for women. I've simply accepted that I have to change her every morning and sometimes at night. Doctor prescribed Detrol and it worked but the Ins wouldn't pay for it so they substituted Oxybutynin and it doesn't work. Thank God her bowel incontinence stopped (has the occasional "accident") after the last rehab.
Her problem when she's awake is that she knows she has to go but can't make it to the commode in time.

Purchase Overnight paper panties ( adult diapers), and change them when wetting occurs.

How many times during the night does someone change his pad? When it gets wet it probably gets uncomfortable and he starts taking things off and spreading the wet.

My father in law was the same way. He'd go through five pairs of pajamas a night. Sheets had to be washed everyday. This went on for a few months and now he has a cathader. He still wakes up many times a night. :(. . Zzzzzzzzzz

I can sympathize. My Mother was the same way. She had a congestive heart problem that we didn't know about. Once she began treatment for that, the wetting subsided.
