The Social Security Adm sent me a letter saying they were lowering the amt of money I would get each month. What should I do? No reason was given why, just lowered it. This the almost the worst possible thing that could have happened. Husband has dementia, I am disabled and so neither of us can work. We have some savings and are living on it and SS. Now this lowering. I can't afford to go to a lawyer and there are no free lawyers here in this small town. Should I go directly to the SS office which is downtown? I doubt it if the council on aging could help as they don't have a person to help with this. She quit on Friday. I really need this money and am unable to work. I am in constant pain. Please give me your advice.

There should be an explanation on the letter, and going to the social security office should help. I hope they don't decide there has been overpayment you have to repay! Usually benefits are never reduced except for Medicare premiums. Has anything else changed?

The only explanation given was that they recalculated it. Everything else is the same.

I sure hope this gets cleared up for you next week....I could not find much info myself, just http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/whileworking3.htm which may not even be your situation, supposedly there should be answers if you search online there and maybe you can get into more if you register and have your own account online...

vstefans, I looked at that site and it says your payment may change. I think I will just let it go, for fear of any more things to go wrong. I couldn't possibly pay it back so I am not going to rock the boat, be on their radar anymore than I am. I will just have to save it in another way. Right now I am saving so much that I am "making the buffalo bleed." So to speak.

You can call your local Bar Association & they will refer you to an hour with an attorney who specializes in Social Security laws. I've done it a couple times (for different reasons), but it was worth the money. I don't know where you live, but in California, it costs $50.

I live way out in the sticks, Wild Wild West. I am sure there is no one here that does SS.
