Today was the second day this week that my dad did not know who my mother was. He usually takes a nap every morning and afternoon. On saturdays he sleeps less than other days. He usually goes to bed between 8:30 and 9 pm. I usually go over at 7:30 to help get him up and ready for church. Today he was tired and asked my mom who she was. Is this normal? It is very upsetting to see him this way. Could it be the mix-up in his routine or is this natural progression? Any suggestions on how to help mom and him at the same time would be helpful.

When my mom was still at home, she would go back to bed mid morning and mid afternoon but she wasn't always sleeping. My sister thought it was from boredom as Mom gradually declined in her attrention span, visual acuity, and mobility and went from an active social volunteer to only watching old tv shows and movies. Or it could have been a coping mechanism, the physical need to change positions (from sitting to laying down) or to process or avoid what she was experiencing due to her PCA.

You are doing the right things---a daily routine with regular hours to sleep. The mix up could be due to a change in his routine, or any of many things, a physical ailment, constipation, a passing moment of confusion---I wouldn't call it a progression of the disease unless it begins to happen frequently. Forgetting who familiar people are, is unfortunately part of Alzheimer's. It may not have anything to do with sleep or routine. All you can do, is keep reminding him of things he's confused about of forgets.
