My 88 year old mother is going to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow and is going to the rehab center in Chester Va. She has underlying health condition (heart failure, narrowing of the brain, dementia, high blood pressure and arthritis). After reading and looking at the news in regards to the Coro virus outbreak in nursing homes in California, I am concern about her being an inpatient at the facility. My question is would you have your 88 year old mother go into a rehab center knowing about the danger of the virus to elderly people with underlying condition? Please advise. I really will appreciate anyone advice on this matter.

Thanks.
Ann

I just checked and there are NO cases of covid19 in Virginia. The benefits of a few weeks of rehab for both her and her caregivers far outweigh the the possibility of her coming into contact with any communicable disease (cold, flu, norovirus are much more likely than COV 19). IF things change you can always bring her home early and she would still have the benefit of whatever time she spends there.

Ann, my mom is a few weeks away from turning 86 with CHF. Right now she's stable, but that can change at any time. My answer is, if my mom was being released from the hospital and their recommendation was rehab, I would take her to the rehab center. My fear with not taking her would be if she came home before she was strong enough it would (possibly) morph into a trip back to the hospital, where I think the exposure to any sort of virus would be way more risky.
Ask yourself this...if this were "just" an outbreak of the flu, would you be as hesitant to bring her to rehab? Unfortunately, as our LOs get older, we can only mitigate the risk of exposure to illness but so far. And if you bring her home with you are you willing to self-quarentine so you don't bring any illnesses into the house with you?
It's a tough decision, not made easier by the media frenzy regarding COVID-19.
Good luck regardless of your decision.

Why was she in the hospital?
Does she need rehab?
If she does and does not go to a rehab facility will she have PT visits and will she comply with following up.
She is in Assisted Living currently I do not think Rehab will be any different (if I read your profile correctly it states mom is in AL now.)
