Has anyone ever heard of shampoo burning the skin?

He may have been allergic to some of the chemicals in the shampoo. Or maybe they interacted with some other medicine he's taking as the chemicals seeped into his skin.

I hope he's feeling better today?

I think I'd hide the shampoo or anything else that might be confused with a skin lotion.

I am an owner of a hair salon for 36 years and in those years I have encountered one client that had a reaction to a particular shampoo that we used. There was a little irritation around the hairline that lasted for about 30 minutes. However, that was only a 2 minute wash. Leaving it on all night...maybe different results. Hope is is doing better.

It seems pretty extreme, even for medicated shampoo, are you sure what he used was was shampoo?

And, did it stop the itch? (lol)

Bella, something occured to me. Is it possible that your dad is allergic to some component in the shampoo? That might explain the extreme reaction.

I'm allergic to parabens and get itching and imflamation with any exposure at all. Can't imagine overnight!

Sounds more like Dad got his hands on a cleaning product, one that has a poison control notice printed on the container on what to do if the cleaner got in contact with the skin.

Maybe get him a big bottle of calamine lotion to use on his " bites".

As one who struggles with chemical allergies, I can tell you there are many, many chemicals in hair products that can cause severe reactions. Most are preservatives, fragrance, masking fragrance, formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers. "Safe" shampoos for people with allergies are Free & Clear and DML (from the pharmacist or ordered online). I emphasize with your Dad's condition and hope he heals soon.

Yes, some medicated shampoo will blister and burn the skin. This from personal experience 😣. I thought if I'd leave the dandruff shampoo on a little longer..... Duh. Won't do that again.

Years ago I used to use Head & Shoulders shampoo, and it seemed to be a bit irritating compared to other shampoos and soaps. I imagine it could be worse for some people.

Not sure if this will help, but one of my dogs once knocked over a bottle of shampoo in the bathtub and it sat there for probably hours. Build-up I had tried all kinds of cleaners on and I thought was permanent was 100% removed where the shampoo had been. So, it may be the length of time that it was in contact with his skin that might have caused the severe reaction for your dad.
