What is the sequence of symptoms of multiple system atrophy (MSA)? Not looking for exact answers as I know "everone is different," but others' experiences might help me be prepared. Wife so far has Pisa symptom, very poor handwriting, slurred speech, some lack of balance, is using cane and/or walker, etc. What are the symptoms that might next happen?

I think I’m the only one here so I’ll tell you what we have seen. Some people have only some symptoms, everyone is different. Bladder issues are big, balance and gait problems, later on speech and swallowing problems, fatigue, handwriting gets very small and hard to read, difficulty standing and walking, eating. Some people have vision problems. Gastrointestinal issues with constipation and incontinence can occur. Muscle wasting, difficulty opening mouth. Perhaps mild confusion at times. Dysphasia. Coordination loss.

Again thanks for a very helpful answer. I am 81, wife almost 76, so I am trying to plan ahead so I can be as much a help as possible. Ironically, we have recently updated our funeral plans with our clergy and are in process of finalizing arrangements with local funeral home. All started just before the Pasrkinson's storm hit. Who knew?

Any hints on how to weather this storm together? Everyone says to take care of myself, but I'm not sure what that means. Sometimes I wonder if doing something that I might think is taking cae of myself is just a selfish excuse for doing something I want to do for MY pleasure.

Clergy, doing something for your pleasure is part of taking care of you.

People are usually referring to that very thing when counseling self care.

I have seen that caregivers do not eat properly, get enough rest, doing heavy lifting that hurts, isolate and basically forget about themselves in the forest of caregiving.

You still matter and you will be a better husband for taking time for you and pleasure. I am sure your wife would tell you the same.
