My senior friend who is active and healthy groans with any activity including walking around his apartment. Advice?

He says he cant help it. This person also had the bad habit of rocking back and forth in a stationary chair. Does this during meals, in social circles. Annoying. When he is reminded of this, he stops momentarily and then starts again.

Jolliere, your friend needs to see his primary doctor to figure out why he is doing this rocking back and forth. Do you know if he had a major fall where he had hit his head, sometimes brain injury can cause such symptoms. He's right, he can't help it.

Is he in pain?

The rocking sounds like anxiety. Does he take anti-anxiety medication?
