When my mother died in Aug, the DOF canceled her SCHE and charged back $2000. (this is a back breaker!) I immediately asked to be enrolled in the SCHE program ( a 50% RE tax reduction) , but they said that it was closed in MAY and I would have to wait until next year! Does anyone know of an exception to this deadline rule? Would appreciate some help. Dick

I've had a little dealing with property tax offices. Their rules are written in stone. They will not bend them at all. I've not heard of prorating property taxes. I don't think they do that around here. The rule here is you have to apply for exemptions the year before. If you even miss it by one day, it is too late. The workers cannot help, even if they want to.

scforum, do you plan to keep your Mother's home? If you sold it, would the real estate tax be pro-rated?

The NY real estate office is the dept that made this catch 22 rule. I have written to them and they replied that the rule is the rule and I must abide by it. No appeal. And the $2000 charge back stands so pay it or else! Dick.

Each State or County has their own rules and qualifications. Your best bet is to call your local or State real estate tax office for that information.
