My cousin just got approved for Medicaid to get into Assisted Living. She has Alzheimer's. The Medicaid check will not arrive until the first of next month, but she must enter Assisted Living now and needs to make payment for this month, only she doesn't have the money. Can we sell her car at fair market value to apply funds for that?

I will recheck, but I think the lady told me that most places will not accept the person until they get their money. If the facility would admit her immediately and wait on the Medicaid funds, that would be great. Now at least I have some hope. I appreciate your input.

Well the 3k would probably be eaten up entirely for the first month payment. Check to make sure Medicaid really won't cover her from day one of her admission.

Good point about the sale bringing in too much cash and causing her to be exempt for Medicaid. That is the major concern and I will not do a thing until it's approved. The Medicaid laws are so complicated. I'm going to talk to the Social Services Medicaid rep and make sure and get it in writing, before I do anything. I just wondered if anyone else had this come up. I realize her assets cannot go over.

The sale of the car would bring app. $3000.00 and that would be a problem. This is so confusing and not sure what to do. I'm trying to think of other options.

Won't the facility wait for the check? Won't she be covered from the time she entered the facility? Don't jump to selling her asset. Check with the Medicaid office and/or the home to make sure you're really going to have a bill and it isn't going to be covered. Is it possible that converting the car to cash could complicate things more if you get a lot of money for the car (more than she's allowed to have in exempt cash)?
