While Mum could theoretically open the door she doesn't grasp how to use the lock and handle at the same time so she isn't locked in but it is secure. If that is going to be a problem you can get alarms that go once the door is opened too some of them even speak and some allow you to record your voice to say something like Mum you need to close the door and go back to the lounge. I was going to say Mum you need to close the door and sit down - if I did that to my mum she would try and sit down exactly where she was.
My mom lives in independent living and they give everyone something to wear for emergencies. Mom started with a necklace, but after losing it several times (hung up in blouses that she'd take off and put in the laundry hamper) I asked for a watch type setting. So now her alert pendant is on a watch band and she wears it that way. She's used to wearing a watch, so that works for her.
Helper, before I got a pendant, I did research on the companies, called and asked each the same questions, and eliminated the ones which (a) didn't promptly return my call (b) gave me a slick spiel on how great their GPS system was, at a time when another company was honest and said that the technology was still being tweaked (c) advertised heavily in older people's magazines but would only ask for my contact information to send literature or have a salesperson call, and refused to answer specific questions.
If you're looking for a dual level, comprehensive security package, make sure the company offering the in house surveillance also has expertise in pendants, and vice versa. Some of the medical alert companies aren't experienced in home surveillance technology or monitoring.
