My mom who is 90 years old and is the spouse of a WW1 veteran was recently granted pay from the Veterans Administration for aid and attendance. I understand that the attendants are supposed to be taxed on their income. Is my mother responsible for paying Social Security and Medicare out of her veterans' benefit pay for her attendants?

I would think that the agency who hires the attendants would pay this not her.

I am not an accountant, but your mother, or whomever has POA, probably has to send out a 1099 to anyone she pays.

The attendants/agency they work for are responsible for their taxes, not your mother.

From what I was told the A&A is reimbursement for 24 hour care and you dont claim it.

Your mother can hire them as independant contractors and they pay their own taxes. Your mom would just give them a 1099 at the end of the year. Unless one specific person is full time then she would not need to pay either.

Its not recorded income, its reimbursement.
