Mom is a 68 year old stroke survivor who lives with us. She has vision impairment, too, and doesn't drive or go outside alone, even. I prefer that she not use the stove. With much preparation and planning, she could probably stay in our home for a week on her own if we wanted to take a vacation / break. But we'd kind of like to have our home to ourselves for more than a day or two when a traveling aunt invites Mom over when she happens to be in town.

Is respite available for someone who isn't bed-ridden? Can anyone share their experiences?

Mom does have some funds - she is on Soc Sec but since she lives with us her expenses are minimal. Having other relatives take her regularly is difficult, which is why I'd like to find something more definite.

I have heard that some assisted living places allow people traveling - like visiting relatives - to stay for a weekend. Maybe I can find something like that.

There are a number of facilities providing quality service for older persons who may or may not be bedridden.

Respite care is definitely available. Does your Mom have funds to pay for it?

Do you mean covered by Medicare? My understanding is that respite is paid by insurance only if a person is on hospice. If there is a long term care policy that may cover respite. If you think mom would be ok by herself, which to me doesn't sound like a good idea, then how about getting another relative to take her for a few days? Call your local area Agency on Aging for ideas. Many assisted living places provide respite services as well.
