In Ohio. In July of 2013, I received a nursing home itemized billing statement for services in May. The balance was paid in full by check. In November, I received another itemized statement that did not credit my payment from July with late charges tacked on. After not being able to speak with the billing department by phone, I sent a registered letter to them with a copy of the check for the July payment noting that it was not credited. They have not responded to my letter. On March 19, 2014 I received another bill for $6300. It was not itemized, but amounted to the July billing statement charge plus 2 late charges.

It appears that they have been paid in full. I don't feel responsible for any late charges as the bill is in dispute. Certainly if they can show any charges on an itemized statement that I haven't paid, I will pay them. What avenues do I have for redress?

Went through this. They had posted my credit to another account. I went in and spoke to the director. I ended up having to bring in all my canceled check records, but the problem finally got solved. Go to the director!

This must be a VERY common problem as I have heard of 2 cases in which this has happened. Fortunately, you check your statements. I wonder how many don't and just pay the bill. Since there was no immediate response from them, I would report this to the state as they are heavily regulated as well as the Better Business Bureau.

Do you ever go to the home in person? If so, meet with the business manager. Bring a printout of your cancelled check and the invoices you've received.

I agree, this sounds like something you're going to have to do in person if the billing department won't answer calls. You can keep trying but in the meantime gather your records together and present them in person.

Similar thing happened to mother's executor, NH claimed they were charging us $3K for "care, etc." not covered by Medicare; posted the claim 6 months after our account was supposedly closed out. Checked with Medicare, they said all claims were paid to the NH. I finally reviewed the billing, right at the top of this "unpaid" bill was a $3K line item with a Medicare code... looked at the code section and it said this bill may NOT be recouped by the nursing home... The NH billing company was unintelligent so I showed them how to read the coding section of the Medicare statement - case closed, no money owed but I do wonder how many people did not carefully check the NH billing charges. It was clearly a logic error in their IT systems where they tried to attach charges not due them.. Beware and read bills closely.

You dance on their desk until they get it right. They subcontract the billing and in some cases the NH ends up bankrupted by mistakes. I like the idea of going to the Director. That poor director is so lonely in that big office, it's nice to visit.

Here is my current experience. My father was a resident in a Nursing home in Norfolk. He left the Nursing home in October of last year when he passed away. However, we get two checks from his secondary insurance to pay for services in June and September. I contact the billing department in another state mind you and I am given different amounts are owed for September and I am told June is paid up, however these amounts are due for August and September. I contact his secondary Insurance and they show August is paid in full, however we reach an amount for September but it does not add up to the NH billing departments amounts for September. I was told that even though you may send in an amount for a designated month the billing department for the NH will apply the amount for a previous month. Has anyone ever encounter a situation like this?
