Need something to thicken without using sugar or sodium.

We use Thik-it. I don't recall if there are sugars or sodium, but I'll check. I found a dysphagia site with about 4 different types of thickeners; I'll see if I can find the link for you.

SimplyThick Gel advertises as being low in carbs and sodium.
You can buy plain xanthan gum in bulk also, but it is a real pain to use because it does not mix easily, I tried it but decided to go with the commercial products. The way to use it is to mix up a batch of very thick water which you then mix into the beverage you want to thicken.

There are commercial thickeners available at your local pharmacy, they are meant to be used in a variety of foods or beverages so are flavourless. Nestle Resource makes two types, Thicken Up made with modified cornstarch or Thicken Up Clear made with xanthan gum.

Thank you so much. But those two effect moms blood pressure with the sodium and her blood sugar levels with the carbs and or sugars. I thank you for taking the time to answer.

Bonnie, I've found some information on thickeners from a site offering dysphagia products and am P'M'ing the contact information to you, as posted links are usually partially deleted.

I have a catalogue which I ordered from this site; I spoke with someone who was very helpful in providing information.

The catalogue doesn't indicate whether sugar or sodium are ingredients, but I believe the helpful information I received suggests the company is willing to spend some time helping potential customers... if you don't find what you want before then. ( Cwillie really knows her stuff!)

From the catalogue, I see that there are different kinds of thickeners; this might help in finding what you're looking for, if you haven't already from CWillie's suggestions.

I asked gardening forum members if they were aware of natural based thickeners, so that I could make my own. I was thinking of arrowroot, e.g., Typically I copy and save all the answers, but right now I can't find them. If I do, I'll share that with you.

It just occurred to me that if you can't find what you want, you might get additional information from a speech therapist in a rehab facility (I've been helped that way), or contacting a hospital dietician. I recall that last year a dietician from Memorial Sloan Kettering was very helpful.
