What might be best will likely be dependent on a # of factors:
- Where is your aunt living right now with the 24/7 caregiver?

- Is aunt's house on the market / up for sale, so you all may be waiting months to actually sell it ? or is house about to go to closing & the act of sale, so there will be the proceeds (the $$) from the sale available to your aunt pretty soon?

-Is aunt's monthly income (like her SS & any retirement) enough to pay for her caregivers and anything needed on the house (till the house sells)?

Also keep in mind, that if your aunt applies & qualifies for Medicaid right now under the situation that she has her home (the house would be an exempt asset for Medicaid), BUT once the house is sold, the $$ from the sale of the home will make your aunt ineligible for Medicaid. Everything will have to either be private paid from the $$ from the sale of the house and the state may want to be reimbursed for whatever they paid through Medicaid for her. Since the house sale is recent, the state will know to the penny what it sold for and you may have to be able to show exactly where all the $$ from house sale went and that it was spent on things allowed by Medicaid. Because of this, for most families it makes better sense to sell the house, then use the $$ from the house to private pay at a NH & do a spend down in ways that work best (like buy a prepaid funeral & burial, get dental work done, buy new glasses, walkers & hearing aids, lots of more appropriate for a NH clothing). Then once all the house sale $$ is gone, then apply for Medicaid.

I agree with Pam. I'd wait for the closing on the house, then she can move to a nursing home under private pay.

You'll want to find the home first and get on a waiting list. If they have an opening before you're ready they'll just move her down the list. Most good nursing homes have waiting lists, at least in my community.
Good luck,
Carol

If you can sell the home and get her into a NH for two years of private pay, you will have a lot more choices of open beds. Going in under Medicaid can mean you have to wait.
