Does anyone have direct experience with life expectancy? My 93 year old mother has not said one word in 8 months. She keeps her eyes closed 24/7 and does not respond to talking or touching. She has to be spoon fed but still eats some. She has been on hospice for 10 months and I am getting concerned about money issues. Anyone have direct experience?

There are several people at the local nursing home who were like that when my mom arrived a year and a half ago, one dear lady is still living; the nurses there told me when they are stable things can go on for a long time. From my observation once they begin to refuse food the end is near.

If you believe truly that your mother has no quality of life, keep her hydrated but provide food only when she asks for it. Swallowing when food is spooned into her mouth is not what she may really want.

She isn't able to ask for food. I think you might be in serious trouble if it weren't offered to her, with adequate assistance.

MsBaldi, when you say you are "getting concerned" about money (after ten months I can imagine you would be!), do you mean that your mother is running out of money - can't Medicaid help? - or that you have been paying for her - why? - or that she is reaching an insurance limit, perhaps? Perhaps there are ways to find financial support.

her long term care ins.uance is expiring this month. I have to spend down all of her remaining funds before I can apply for Medicaid.

The real crux of my question is if anyone has direct experience of how long a person can live in this state
