I'm asking for myself, an 85 year old female who lives in independent living facility. I want to get an emergency alert system, and would like to know what ones you caregivers find best. I have fallen twice in the last six months. In one situation, I was able to get up by myself because I had learned how to crawl to a chair and brace my arms on it to push to a standing position. But next time there may not be a nearby chair, and I may not have the strength to push up. The other time, I tripped on a high curb and fell into a lane of oncoming traffic in a parking lot. A driver got out of her car, and held her arm out so I could push up on it. Next time, the driver may not have time to stop. .In both situations, I fell, hitting the right rear side of my skull, shoulder and hip. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for the thorough answer. You make an excellent point of " your best bet there is probably some type of cell phone kept where it is easy to reach, not in a purse that you may be separated from." I never thought of that.I live in an independent living facility in a forest where there is no cell phone reception. I will still carry a cell phone when I visit areas that do. I do attend a seniors exercise class here.I have a Rollator; may start using it more often. I can afford a mid price range system. Would definitely want one that connects to central dispatch; my adult children live far away. I will mention past falls to my new doctor.

There are many systems available out there that vary in cost, all work depending on what your needs are. Some points to consider... How much can you afford? Do you want it monitored by a central dispatch or just connected to a family member? Would you rather own or rent? How comfortable are you with newer technology?
Perhaps it is time to consider using a rollator, at least when you are going out? Most of the alert systems have a home base so I doubt they would work in the parking lot, your best bet there is probably some type of cell phone kept where it is easy to reach, not in a purse that you may be separated from. You also should mention the falls to your doctor, perhaps there is something physical going on that needs to be addressed. You might also benefit from going to a seniors exercise program to help improve your strength and balance.
