Even if you are POA, you are not responsible for your father's debts. They are not in your name. From reading your profile, it appears you need to place your parents in assisted living, or nursing home. Start looking into Medicaid. You have a son that needs your attention. Lose the guilt - it is easy to say, but guilt does no one any good. Helping your parents find a new place to live is taking care of them. Nursing homes are not all bad - there is good care and they are safe, and not lonely as there are plenty of people around.

Your son needs you - that is your priority. Take care.

I agree with 3pinkroses. Start the Medicaid application process before worrying about your father's debts.

How wonderful that you have been able to keep your parents so close to you for so long. They are very lucky to have you. Now it is time for you to move on to caring for them in a different way. Part of that will be figuring out their financial situation. The place to start is getting them eligible for long-term care. Paying off consumer debt might be part of the spend down process.

Exploring options and figuring out what to do next can be daunting! I found that calling my county's social services department was an excellent starting place.
