Lawyers or Support organizations in Albuquerque,NM area
A friend of mine is the sole caregiver for her ADULT mentally disabled child (paranoid schizophrenic) in her home. Caregiving for he son is a full time job. My friend took early retirement from the US post office so that she could care for him.
Questions:
1) Is she able to receive caregiver payment for caring for his son? Please keep in mind her son is totally disabled and cannot be left alone for extended periods.
2) If she is not able to receive payment as a caregiver for him, then can an outside caregiver be paid to care for him if she goes back to work?
3) Are there any Lawyers or Support organizations in the Albuquerque area that can assist with her with applying for assistance.

You can go online for information about services available. Call the local mental health service and I am sure they can provide all the info you need. Check for a NAMI group in the area (National Alliance for Mental Illness). They offer services and groups for the diagnosed and for their families and it is all free! There are many services available in larger cities she just has to reach out.

Best of luck!

Has she considered a group home? Does her son receive ssi/ssdi? Is there a day treatment program he can go to? Check to see if there's is a local behavioral health facility in your area sometimes they have day programs.and may even provide transportation.

He can live in a group home and be properly medicated and collect Medicaid and SSI to pay for it. All she has to do is contact the county office of the disabled in her city. My guess is she won't do it, though. Instead she will let this be her demise.

My nephew was disabled with Schizophrenia. My sister in law was not able to get paid for taking care of him. Thankfully, she had her own soc. sec. He was able to draw disability, AND was supposed to pay her rent, utilities, etc. But, since the checks were in his name, there was nothing she could do, if he wouldn't pay her. Despite attempting to save him for 15 years, he died over a pain pill overdose.

Would his mother be able to get disability? There are programs to get her a cleaning woman a few hours a week.

If his needs are working there is no reason why she can't leave him alone to work. He's mentally I'll not retarded. The problem with the mentally ill is often times they don' t believe they are ill and don't stay on their meds and self medicate with alcohol or drugs. Or they just don't have access to the care or medicine they need. If she can't leave him alone then she needs to put him in a structured environment.
