My mom has worn glasses (nearsighted) and hearing aids for years. In her dementia, she's lost both. There's no way at this point that she could comply with instructions to have a new visual and hearing exam. She's just gotten enrolled in hospice and the intake nurse mentioned this is probably contributing to her withdrawal and communication issues. This has motivated me to try to find out if there are any options that might be imperfect but better than nothing. Ideas much appreciated!

Kittybee, my cousin wears Hue hearing aids and loves them.

They cost under 200.00 per pair.

Glasses are very dependant on her sight, not all vision can be helped with over the counter but, the old prescription could be enough to get her by. I would find the cheapest eyeglass provider possible to get them made, we have ones that will do single vision for $29.00 and bi-ficals for $39.00. Well worth researching your area.

Best of luck.

Thanks! Someone just told me about Pocketalkers. It's a kind of big, clunky device meant to be worn only for conversation, not to hear everything. I favor something big and clunky so she can't lose it! Thanks for the recommendation for Hue, I'll look that up too (I also need aids and am always looking out for alternatives - the hearing aid industry is going through some interesting changes right now that should be good for consumers - let's hope!).

Not all eye doctors give patients a copy of their prescriptions unless they are going somewhere else for glasses. Does Mom have a checkbook to see if she wrote a check to an eye doctor? Does she have a vision card so you can call them and see who her doctor is of record? Has she seen an eye doctor since being in the facility? If so, who took her? The facility must have a record if they had to supply the transportation or the doctor came in there. And eye doctor can examine eyes and figure out what strength someone needs without the patients help. My nephew had glasses at 8 months old. I asked the doctor then how he was able to get the correct strength and he said by the way the eye refraxs light.

OTC glasses are just readers, bifocals. If Mom only need glasses for reading no problem, but if she has other sight problems, they will not solve the problem.
