Here in Tallahassee FL. the fees are more than I can pay. I moved here from Alabama where I was my mother's legal guardian. I have all legal documents. I cannot hire attorney to obtain guardianship because the fees are too expensive for me to pay. I need help in obtaining this legal guardianship as my mother is legally mentally ill and lives with me and is my sole responsibility. I need direction as to where to seek help in obtaining this assistance for financial help. Thank you

The important question is, where are her assets? If they are still in Alabama then you need to keep the Alabama Guardianship papers. If you want to transfer them to Florida, you must apply for permission from the court who appointed you. Judges often refuse to do this and appoint a local person as conservator, within their jurisdiction.
Adding to this is that FL and AL have no agreement or reciprocity for transferring guardians. So you either pay a lawyer or move back to AL

Pamstegma, I do have ALL MY LEGAL DOCUMENTATION FROM AL and have everything in order here I just do not have the funds to complete the process in FL courts. That is why they have attorneys for elder care who don't have funds such as this.
That is why I am asking WHO IN TALLAHASSEE PRACTICES SUCH LAW? I must say that I have contacted the Bar Association several times and have yet to even receive a return phone call? Not very good representation for Florida I will say. Disappointing to say the LEAST

My experience with Legal Services for the Elderly was not good. They would not help with a guardian proceeding because it was too expensive. So, back to my original answer.

You need legal advice from an attorney. There's no way around it. You may need to see if your moving the Ward from her home state was allowed. As well as whether there is reciprocity between the two states. So much to consider. Legal advice would be needed.

I tried a web search for legal services for the indigent in Tallahassee Florida since you state that you have no money for a lawyer. I found the following information for Legal Aid Foundation - Have you contacted them? I was not sure if this is who you meant by "the bar". Unfortunately, as you are seeking FREE assistance, your resources will be limited and this time of year especially are stretched thin with lawyers on vacations, holiday, and end of year rush. Hopefully if she receives Medicaid, your mother's new application for the state of Florida goes smoothly.
