My 87 year old dad still has his teeth. The front bottom ones are rotting. He has a terrible toothache now and because of all his medical issues, blood thinners etc. I don't know where to take him. He doesn't have a dentist here in Austin. And of course no dental insurance. HELP

Many dentists offer payment plans, so ask about that.

Also, is there a dental school in your area? Usually they are looking for patients for their students to work with (learn on!), and offer services at very low rates.

Thanks for everyones advice. I did get my dad into see a dentist who referred us to an oral surgeon. He has to be off his blood thinners for a week before the surgery can take place. We applied for the in house financing. It is going to cost about 2000 to pull his two teeth and put in a bridge. If he doesn't get the financing I will pay for it. My dad has always been so careful about his appearance. It would break my heart if he had to go with no teeth in the front.

There are many dentists in Austin, TX. Even better, many of them specialize in geriatric dentistry, since the teeth and gums of elderly people can often be in poor shape. If you google "geriatric dentist Austin" you will get a list of dentists. I checked a few of them. They were ranked high and provided just the services your father will probably need. The main problem will be paying for the services.

One thing I wondered is if the UT had a school of dentistry. If they do, they may see your father for less. At your father's age, however, if I could swing the money, I would opt for the geriatric dentist.

Do you have a dentist? Start there to see who he recommends. When I moved my folks near me, I started them with my dentist, but they couldn't navigate the stairs. So he recommended a good dentist who was on the first floor for them

I would start with his primary care physician. Call them and tell them about your dad's dental needs. See if they can refer him to a dentist. Then call the dentist's office and explain to them what's going on with your dad. If they can get him in they can tell you what meds, if any, to temporarily discontinue (usually for 24-48 hours) prior to your dad's checkup.

I don't know about all dental offices but I know that my dentist offers financing through a 3rd party. I think the interest is pretty high but it's not quite as painful as a toothache ;-)
