The AL facility in which she resided insisted she go to a skilled nursing facility for two to three weeks. She is now at a skilled nursing faciltiy. However, now the AL facility wants her to return. We live on the east coast and this is occurring on the west coast. When do the family members ask for an ombudsman to look into her care? I would like to know the full role of an ombudsman if anyone has had experience with them.

Welcome, CareforCarole.

It sounds as though after her hospitalization, it was recommended for your sister go to rehab. My any rehabs are located in SNFs.

After a qualifying hospital stay (generally 3 nights) Medicare will pay for 20 days of rehab. After that, it sounds as though your sister will return to her AL.

Does that sound like the scenario you are describing?

I agree with Barb. She is in Rehab and being discharged back to her home the AL. This is not an Ombudsman problem. They are called in when there is a problem with a persons care in a facility overseen by them.
