"In order to buy a policy on someone else, the life insurance beneficiary (the person who receives the payout) must have an "insurable interest" in the person covered by the policy. This means the beneficiary must experience a loss when the insured person dies, whether that's emotional or financial.Apr 22, 2022"

I guess you could try and sue her because she was also a child but not sure you would win. Beneficiaries do not have to share the insurance policy money. Meaning, the cost of a funeral does not have to be covered.

A friend of mine had a 100k thru her employer. She always felt that her daughter, the beneficiary, would pay her funeral and get the balance. That did not happen. The daughter took it all feeling that second husband was responsible. They hadn't been married for years.

A woman I knew had a policy on her ex. Why, because if he died tge child support she was getting would stop.

It's very common to have a life insurance policy when a couple divorces and minor children are involved.

No. You are not entitled to getting your money back from the burial unless the policy was specifically a burial policy intended for that purpose.
When your mother's estate is probated you will be able to submit a claim through the probate court to get your money paid back from your mother's estate.
Please let your sister know that she should be ashamed of herself leaving you to pay the burial bill for the mother of both of you while she collects insurance money.
Are you sure your mother didn't have a burial policy? She might have and if this is what your sister cashed in she could be in trouble.
