My friend is 65 and her husband is disabled from a stroke and she's his primary caregiver. She's been looking for almost a year now and all the places for the elderly to live are all taken or the rent is too high. Since her husband is disabled and in a wheelchair they need a place that does not have steps and that's very hard to find, especially at the amount they are able to pay. Their Social Security checks put them just ABOVE low income. My friend has been told her husband could get a lot more help if he were divorced but she doesn't want to divorce him. They have to find a place in 60 days. Can anyone tell me where they can get help?

Can you search "Supportive Housing"?

You might want to try a rental management company. Although these companies often manage higher end property, there is often one or two around managing smaller and cheaper properties. Instead of looking for no steps, describing your needs as a single level with a good sized bathroom and a entrance near parking with minimal entry steps. A ramp can be built or purchased to cover 1-3 entry steps for $300-$1000.

It would help to know what state you are in. Is your husband a veteran by chance? Unfortunately income-based housing is hard to come by, there simply isn’t enough out there so there is almost always a long wait list. Have you contact your area on aging or department of social services? If your husband is disabled, he should have access to some services despite your income.
