Grilled cheese or a BLT and ice cream.

Tricia, usually the Assisted Living facilities keep watch on what their residents eat. And if so far the dining staff hasn't rattled any chains about this, then I would just mark it up to being an non-issue. I bet the grilled cheese and ice cream is now a "routine" for your Mom, and you don't want to disrupt that.

Thanks for the replies. One problem is that she is in assisted living and eats in their dining room/cafe and orders what she wants...I'm only there twice a week for a meal with her. I realize it won't kill her, and seems like a small thing so I will just let it go.

I'm with Freqflyer - as long as mama isn't washing the sandwich down with gin, it's not the worst thing. I add fresh berries to Papa's morning oatmeal/cereal and when I make him a sandwich for lunch (usually egg salad) I add a side of veggies. I found small boxes of microwavable veggie mixtures produced by the Green tall guy in the freezer case at the local grocery - abt $1.50 each. Each box contains just enough for a side for Papa's lunch and they're interesting and tasty combinations (with some nutrition). Pick up a couple of those and add it to her plate with the sandwich - she might go for it.

Tricia, I see from your profile that your Mom has Alzheimer's/Dementia. I would think just letting your Mom eat the same things for lunch and dinner would be less stressful then trying to introduce other items into her diet.

The grilled cheese and ice cream are usually childhood favorites, so eating those items probably are comforting to her. Try putting out a side dish of cut up fruit and see if she notices.... if she doesn't notice, then don't say anything.
