Mom is 92 - very smart, takes care of self, hard of hearing, still drives during the day, wants to move up here from Florida so she's closer to us. Has limited moneys, just social security. Loves bingo. Anxious and overwhelmed at the move. CICOA was not helpful; "they don't do housing," pretty sure she would not meet the Medicaid Waiver -- would appreciate specific suggestions as to places to check out. I'm in Indianapolis, on the northeast side.

I would contact a realtor; she/he would probably be the best source to find the cottage type home your mother wants, unless she qualifies for Section 8 housing.

You might also inquire about retirement communities, especially ones in scenic areas so she could still have some of the Florida riverine and ocean atmosphere of water.

I think it was Babalou, one of our regular and very knowledgeable and helpful posters, who sometime mentioned a different kind of retirement community. I can't find the links or any reference I might have saved, but it was an appealing setting, and if I recall correctly had a lot of planned activities for the residents.

Maybe someone else has knowledge of this type of community?

Another suggestion: An in-law unit placed on your property. See tiny-house living; Park Model trailer/manufactured homes.

Seniors living in a nice mobielhome park have a semi-independent lifestyle with bingo, congregate meals, home-delivered meals, support of neighbors looking out for each other, etc. This can be an affordable option before a nursing home.

Atul Gawande, in his book, On being Mortal, talks about new client centered, community based elder communities. I believe the ones he talked about were in Massachusetts. I'll see what i can find.
