Mom has no other income other than her monthly Social Security and the Aid & Attendance she gets from the VA. VA money is not taxable and I now see that even thought I have been filing Fed and State income tax for a few years for her, I do not need to do that based on her age and the amount she receives. So, does my contribution for her Assisted Living - pays about 50% of her Assisted Living bill - qualify me to claim her as a dependent on my Fed and State tax filing?

This is a question for your tax preparer and I would ask CPA.

You can claim your mom as a dependent as long as income and support levels are met. Your moms gross income, excluding her social security (unless she has enough income that makes it taxable) has to be less than $4,150 and you have to provide OVER half of their financial support.

There is no other income so I feel like I am in good shape but have a friend who is a tax guy/CPA and will run this by him. Thanks for the response.
