I’ve noticed in the last two weeks mom sleeping a lot more and now she can’t seem to want to open her eyes when I believe she is even awake. Her speech is pretty much gone but there was a little interaction but that seems gone. She’s in memory care on hospice. Anyone notice the closed eyes when their loved one is awake? Is that common?

I have. It’s part of the disease. Just wondering if anyone else experienced the eyes closed even when they are awake.

Yes, my Mom closed her eyes two weeks before she passed. She then would not get out of bed. She seemed to understand what was said to her. She responded.

The really weird thing was that she had closed he eyes previously for a short periods of time. And when she did, she was lucid.

Yes. Daddy rarely opened his eyes the last couple weeks of his life. He was awake, if you spoke to him, he'd say "I'm just resting my eyes". Also was on Hospice at the time.

Same with my dad the last few days of his life while under hospice care in his home.

My mom did this too for several years, it wasn't related to the end of life.

I noticed my mother doing that this week. I think it’s one of the terrible symptoms of dementia.

Talk to her hospice nurse they will be able to give you an educated guess at the situation. My grandma didn't open her eyes the last week of her life. She would answer me back. It's hard to say everyone is different. My heart goes out to you and your family.
