Would calling the local fire department to come and speak to her have any effect? Maybe they could give a demonstration of what could happen, or show her pictures or a video. If she does not comply ask them to return. Another suggestion, ask her to limit her cooking to the microwave, or a crockpot if that is safe. Help her find recipes for those. If need be shut off the gas when you are not using the stove, What she is doing is hazardous, and could lead to a disaster.
Hi njmommy, I read somewhere that to keep your child from using the gas stove you take off the knobs and put them somewhere only you know to use when you need them. Could you do that with your Mom? Maybe her fingers couldn't work the dials without the knobs? Or there are covers you can buy for gas stove knobs that kids cannot use-maybe an elder's fingers would not be able to either.
Hi. --just be careful, if you take the knobs off, that she cannot turn the hardware underneath and not realize it-I would hate for it to turn some and leak!!!!! -maybe get a carbon monoxide detector by the stove just on case. :0)
How do you know she doesn't have some type of dementia? To me, it sounds like she has at least a little! Regardless, for both of you, you need to prevent her from burning the house down by keeping her from turning on the gas. Can she use the microwave instead?
I removed the knobs and put black electrical tape on them. Also a sign that says "Out of order". There MAY be an onset of dementia if she keeps using the stove.
