Was this diagnosis based on a DEXA or other diagnostic test? What are the doctors recommending?

If they suggest taking Fosamax, do your research first. This is a powerful drug with side effects. My father took it but discontinued it b/c of the side effects. Also research Fosamax class actions suits so you can be aware of the lawsuits against the manufacturer.

Ask the diagnosing doctor if he/she'll script for PT; weight bearing exercise is considered an excellent way to deal with osteoporosis.

Can Mom still safely walk outside? If so, go for short walks. If she's in a facility, again take her for walks. It's a weight bearing exercise.

Review Mom's diet and sett if you can add foods with calcium, and ask the doctors how much calcium and vitamin D she should be taking.

Also, if Mom drinks coffee, gradually wean her off it.

There's a decent amount of information here (Web MD) that addresses foods that leach calcium from the body. webmd/osteoporosis/living-with-osteoporosis-7/diet-dangers?page=2.

I wondering the same thing. My cousin has this condition and has sustained 5 fractures over the last 5 months, including a spinal fracture. Hers are from falls though. Her orthopaedic doctors have declined to prescribe her any of the super bone building meds, even though I asked and they didn't find her a candidate for kyphoplasty. I'm not sure what to do. She is taking calcium and vitamin D. Exercises are difficult, since she's so weak and her dementia is increasing.
