Find Care & Housing
I am so sorry for you, both parents experiencing memory impairments. I must commend most answers regarding your plight, this forum is great! You must know this will get worse for you, and them. Your attention and care needs, theirs, will increase. By themselves, even now, you must know, an accident is waiting to happen. If your mom or dad can't reach you, they call 911, 911 will call you, an emergency contact I presume. They become aware of the situation that 2 people, with dementia are alone, the "what ifs" questions will come up, adult services could be called in. With dementia there is a loss of perception of time, so, a phone call at any given time can happen. If you say you're on your way in a 1/2 hour, that seems forever to them, more calls. They/you may need to have a companion for now, if you don't need hands on help for them, which will come up eventually, just being there is what it is. Think about increasing their day program to every day to aid you. Socialization is the best for all stages of memory impairments, idle time can equal trouble for them. My brother with ALZ was living 1000 miles away, I was not aware of any of his health concerns, till an emergency call. Once I got to him, what I saw during my 60 day visit, was frightening. Yes, clueless on the remote was one, phone as well, reason for no calls. Heat turned on during 100 degree summer days, live wires pulled out of celings/walls just because, climbing on ladders, using power tools, driving, so many things too many to share. Sad to see and say, home and alone was no longer an option, the what ifs were there for who knows how long till I got that call no one wants. Thank God there was no accident to him or anyone. Start exploring options, consult with an elder attorney, knowledge will help you and make things easier on the start of this journey. Caregiving is hard, physically and mentally, just be prepared and take care of you as well. God Bless

BarbBrooklyn: Spot on! Even though I suggest that it does end, the caregiver is, quite literally, almost driven to insanity as we all know.
