We were able to find a place where her long term care insurance will cover where she will be moving to. The LTC requires that there has to be a nurse on call 24/7 and where she is now, they don't. My thing is, once her LTC insurance won't cover the new place anymore, if she could move to assisted living. It's usually cheaper there also. She is going to be 89 in January. She can live for another 10 years, who knows? Her mom died when she was 92. No one wants their parent to die early. I don't. But we might end up at a stand-still if we don't think about it now. I know that I am, but not sure about my brother. He had a big load put on him and is doing a great job. To keep things smooth, I won't mention anything until the time frame gets closer. Am I doing the right thing the way that I'm thinking?

I do not think a transfer from a memory care facility back to a lower level of care (assisted living) is possible. AL will not allow people to remain there that require medical care on that level.

once the insurance runs out, then you would be using whatever her financial resources for her continued care...after that, you would apply for Medicaid.

be sure the MC you pick will accept Medicaid patients. Some of them do require a certain period of self pay first...look to be sure her resources and insurance will cover that amount of time.

She just sold her house last year, so when needed, she can start using that, if she stays alive that long. Her dad died when he was 67,cancer, and her mom died at 92. My mom is going to be 89 in Jan. She has a heart murmur but so does her brother and he is 85. Just glad that she is still alive and that she knows who we are. They are a private pay and I know that they won't accept Medicaid. She has enough money too last for a while. I will keep everyone up on how she is doing after she has been at her new place for several months. At least the new place will be able to give her medicine to her where the current place couldn't since they aren't nurses. Which is weird but I don't understand that. Took a couple of months to finally get her medicine situated.. Thanks for your advice.

If your mom qualifies for memory care now then she’s not going to be able to step down to a lower level of care in an assisted living facility. Judy I know it’s a difficult situation but you really need to try to come to terms with the fact that your mother is going to get progressively worse as the dementia progresses.

The neuro psych doctor said that she can be at this level for years.  She is going to be 89 in January.  She didn't remember a lot of things when she moved to where she is now.  But since being there, some of her memory has come back.  Not totally and I accept that.  At first, she couldn't tell the time on the clock on the wall or on her watch and now she can.  Takes a minute but she knows the exact time. The move for her was too fast for her.  I told her that this is the final place for her to move.  There is a max of 32 people in the new facility.

What concerns me here is that Mom might be moving to a level of care she doesn't yet need, Judy, or DOES she need long term care. If she is being moved to Memory care only to get coverage (there would be no nurses on call 24/7 in either ALF or Memory Care in many cases, and I guestion a policy that demands that to cover), then she is being forced to take very expensive care she doesn't yet require. Can you fill me in a little. Has her doctor or her current placement suggested that she needs memory care now?

We were told that she has a memory issue.  It's starting to come back.  She is one of the high functioning dementia.  There is a nurse there 24/7.   This place is called Grand Brook Memory Care.  She will be at the one in Greenwood,IN.  Have visited them and they are very nice.  Opened this past September.  My brother likes it too.  He sent it to her LTC insurance and they approved it.  I think that it's because they have a nurse on staff 24/7.  In a way, I look at it as assisted living.  She doesn't need that much help.  Just a lot of reminders.
