She talks in whispers, cannot hear her. Is this normal or a phase? I tell her to speak up but she continues to whisper. Any advise?

Find Care & Housing
My mother is 93, lives in Memory Care ALF, is wheelchair bound with dementia as well. Sometimes she speaks so softly she can barely be heard. Other times, she speaks in a normal tone. Today she said she was "losing her voice" which she claims happens sometimes, and earlier was whispering in the car, then complaining I couldn't hear her. She also sniffles constantly and requires tissues CONTINUOUSLY. She cannot be without a tissue for literally one minute without panicking.

I can cite other examples of behaviors that make no sense, but what's the point? It's always something, and it's always senseless.....THAT is the point. Sometimes, the bigger fuss I make about something she's doing, the worse it seems to get. My advice is to ignore it ALL.

If you can't hear her and she has to repeat herself 100x, she will probably get the hint eventually and speak up.

Good luck!

Tessabella, ask the Staff if your Mom is talking in whispers when they are present. Then you know if it is part of dementia, or if your Mom is being quiet when you are there.

Does your Mom know who you are? Do you go to the facility at the same time during your visit? I was wondering if Mom has gone back in time when you were a young child, and it is nap time. Thus, one needs to whispers.

Mom does recognize me and the staff also told me she whispers. She also whispers when my brother is there and we visit at different times. It's the dementia or just a phase. I will leave it alone and won't push her to speak up. Thanks for the input.
