Check out healthcare.gov to locate the SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) in your state for help in understanding Medicare Choices. Also refer to the annual book Medicare sends out every year. Honestly it's not that hard to understand the ABCDs of Medicare.

Perhaps your friend is on a program (SSI or SSDI) that gives her help paying for Medicare.

Medicare Advantages claim that in some zip codes they can reimburse for that $148 a month. But I am very leary of MAs. They are contracted out by Medicare but have a network of providers that u must use. This may not be to your best advantage. With straight Medicare, as long as the provider excepts Medicare you can go to any doctor you choose. If ur friend is paying $85.10 for a supplimental, that is not bad.

If your friend is low income, she may be able to get Medicaid which I do think pays the $148 in some instances. It does for my nephew.

I suggest you call your County Office of Aging, They should be able to help your friend find a plan where she can save money. Go with her so there are two sets of ears. Do not try to help her without having the proper information.
