I posted on her before- though it has been awhile. My fiance's Grandma is almost 95 and was diagnosed with rectal cancer last year. She underwent 6 weeks of radiation and rehab and has been home for about 10 months. Over the last few weeks, she has been increasingly uncomfortable and having increasing bowel issues (very frequent and large volume) She isn't sleeping well due to the frequency. We moved into a new home and we have a baby monitor in use so I can hear her if she falls or needs help. All I am hearing at night is her praying and saying "save me". She is increasingly more cranky and miserable. particularly in the morning. Immodium isn't controlling or easing symptoms. SHe has a doctors appointment coming up- but I don't know what else to do. Her grandson and I are getting married next week. All I can think of is that her time is coming and how our plans will be affected. Selfish I know. I'm sitting here at work, wanting to go home and be with her. But I cant. Any hints, ideas or support is welcome.

I'm just going to give you a word of support. It sounds like you're doing all you can do to make her comfortable. She's very lucky to have both of you helping her. Maybe the doctors will have some ideas or medications that can help. Just be sure she stays hydrated. And you have every right to be concerned about how this will affect your upcoming nuptials. I hope you can enjoy yourself on your big day...I'm sure your fiance's grandmother wants that too.

With her history, If there is change in frequency, or appearance of stool, it warrants a doctor check. One thing you especially want to watch out for is black tarry stool or red blood in it.

Unfortunately, norestforweary, she refuses to see the GI doc or do further exploration into the cancer/treatments. the Radiation was VERY hard on her. She gets regular visits from a doctor at home. and her next appointment is right after the wedding...but I can't help but worry. I believe there have been changes and blood in the stool. But I can't force her into treatment etc.

She is asking for God to help her.......... she may be bleeding. Needs ER..... better now than next week at wedding time.

I would have to believe she's nearing the end of her time and there's probably not much they can do at this point. I'd consider whether she'd be a candidate to go into the hospital (or some kind of respite care) so that you know in the coming week she's getting the best possible medical care and you don't have to worry. But from what you're saying, she won't want to consider that. She's probably ready to go and is asking for help to make that happen...such a hard time for all of you. {{Hugs}}
