I'm not yet "elderly" but I'm getting there. I take a very high dose (400 mg/day) of Lamictal. It's a mood stabilizer and it has been a God-send for me. I know that atypical anti-psychotics are not good for the elderly but haven't heard anything about Lamictal.

You might want to check the website called "CrazyMeds: Finding the treatment options that suck less." It has tons of information of all the psychiatric medications, including side effects. Here is the page on Lamictal.

My husband has Lewy Body Dementia and the only drugs my neurologist will prescribe for him are Aricept once a day and Sinemet 4 times a day. You have to be careful as some drugs on the market do more harm than good for dementia patients. And what works well for one type of dementia may not work for another type. Consult your Dr. about this issue.

Check webmd. This medication is used as anti seizure med for bipolar conditions and for some depression. Read up on all the side effects and interactions. My dad 83 yr old dad has dementia with Lewy bodies, with Parkinsonisms (sudden freezing up or stiffening of muscles that prevent movement) plus total body atrophy. He sundowns late afternoon into and through the night. Lately he has been having boughts of delusions where he sees things and people who have passed. He is not on this medicine. What the drs. Gave home they say are the only meds for his condition. I am always skeptical about new meds being given and how tried and true they actually are. Research all you can about this medication and good luck.

Lamictal is an excellent new drug with many uses. If the delusions include manic or depressive episodes, and the neurologist has done MRI/CT/EEG workup, go ahead. If its just a guess from the primary physician, good luck.

I took Lamictal for over a year for gran mal seizures and it worked okay, however it did cause cataracts after 9 months of use in both eyes and I had to have cataract surgery on both eyes at 40 years of age.

Clonepin, Restirol failed to help her. Started my mom on 12.5 mg nightly for ICU psychosis & delirium, saw an immediate reduction in severity of hallucinations and fear. Gradually increased dose by 12.5 weekly to current dose 50 mg nightly. After 3 weeks, Mom is back to full mental health, resting well at night without fear, or delirium!
